Beginners ask these first
Ledger Live Desktop is the companion app you install on your computer; your hardware device holds the keys. The app organizes, displays, and prepares — the device approves. Keep that split in mind and every answer below clicks into place.
Is Ledger Live Desktop free?
Yes. Installing and using the desktop app costs nothing. You only pay standard blockchain network fees when you send assets — those go to the network, not to the app.
Do I need a hardware wallet to use it?
For real protection, yes. The desktop app is built to pair with a hardware device that stores your private keys offline. Without one you can only watch balances, not approve transactions securely.
Which computers does it run on?
Recent versions of Windows, macOS, and common Linux distributions. Keep your operating system updated, and install the app from the official source via your own bookmark.
How do I back up my wallet?
Your backup is the recovery phrase created when your hardware device was first set up. Write it on paper, store copies in two separate safe places, and never photograph or type it into any app or site.
What do I check before approving a transaction?
Three things: the full destination address, the exact amount, and the fee. Read them on your big screen first, then confirm the identical details on your hardware device screen before approving.
My transaction is pending — what now?
Usually it just needs more network confirmations or a higher fee during busy periods. Check the status in the activity list, wait, and avoid resending duplicates. If it stays stuck for hours, review the fee options in the app.
Can I track my whole portfolio here?
Yes. The portfolio view combines your accounts into total value, allocation, and performance over time. It's designed for a calm weekly review rather than constant checking.
Is this site affiliated with Ledger?
No. Ledger Live Hub is an independent educational resource with original guides. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Ledger, and nothing here is financial advice.
